My Guitar Effects Setup

Ok so a lot of people have emailed me in Friendster and MySpace asking how I setup my guitar to get that munchy in-your-face metal guitar as heard in some of our recordings. I have had good and bad comments about that tone, (most notoriously the comment in Pulp Magazine) and so here it goes. I admit that its not the actual tone I wanted, and it really sounds mushy without any distinction to it…. but it eventually had a wall of metal guitar sound to it so its a 50-50 love for me. But many people have commented it has been by far one of the heaviest guitars they’ve heard in a local recording.

Since I was stubborn and refused to listen to the engineers suggestion to setup like the other bands used to, it took an hour before my guitar was finally allowed to be setup the way I wanted it to be setup. Well I had great respect for the engineer Eric Apuyan (who handles big shot artists like Sharon Cuneta, Regine Velasquez) and Mally Paraguaya (the bassist of the most kick-ass funk band in the entire Philippines… P.O.T.) but I wanted to sound different from all the rest of the bands and I refused to play it the way they wanted it.

They wanted me to just simply plug my guitar to a distortion pedal and plug it to the Fender amp. Less Hassle, less frills.

What I really wanted: I brought along a complicated schematic of how I wanted it to be recorded, and a lot of reference CD’s. ( I was aiming for Meshuggah wall of metal kind of guitar sound). I wanted a sound that would blow you away when you listened to it with your headphones. Well I don’t know if I did get it, but I guess a dozens of people commenting how that guitar sound on the final product was the heaviest tone they had ever heard from a Pinoy band, so I might have done something right.

Okay back to story. When they finally agreed… it took another hour and a half to setup the tone the way I wanted it setup.

That wall of metal guitar…. is the sound of my guitar through a simulated Mesa-Boogie Dual Rectifier on 4 x 12 cabs done with a Korg DPE on the main channel and split channel through a real and organic Fender 100w studio combo amp for the high range and a minor channel through another digital amp simulator but set to just overdrive and a cabinet simulator.

So in effect, I plug into three amps, and have the three tones together in the mixer to form one composite sound output. The purpose here is that I now have three seperate amps to control instead of BASS MID and HIGH. I fiddle the Mesa-Boogie to adjust the low-mid and the Fender amp for the highs. The digital amp sim eats up the center mid frequencies so I have a full bodied sound.

Then I play all tracks twice…. once on each of the left and right channels to create the impression of a “wall of sound” when you listen to it with your headphones. During our monitoring in the studio with the unmixed sound, it gave me goosebumps just listening to something that sounded really heavy and evil.

The other channel was connected to a digital amp simulator that recorded an overdrive tone for the purpose of putting some weight on the riffs, but unfortunately I think this was lost in the mix. This is the part that I really wanted to go back and have remixed but unfortunately they already signed the production forms so they song is as good as mixed forever.

I wish I could correct this mix in the near future cause I definitely think the tone in that recording lacked power….. they left out the overdrive mix. I hope they did not do it to deliberately to piss me off.

I tell you, I hated that recorded sound and is still wishing i could go and have it remixed if had my way.

My live setup

My guitars are a Gibson Les Paul Gothic Edition with PAF pickups and a Gibson Les Paul Classic Cherry Red Sunburst. I had them both reconfigured and rewired (simplified the wirings) and my pickups are set to about 3mm above the strings if the depressed.

I go through these pedals:

Boston Electronics Volume Control/Wah pedal

Yamaha Compressor/Sustainer

Marshall Shred Master

BOSS Hyper Metal 2

Zoom G2 Digital Effects Processor + CASIO Expression Pedal

BOSS Harmonist.

I carry all these pedals in a pedal board only in major gigs, and usually just pack the Digital Effects Processor for small bar gigs.

Guitar Set Up Guide

An introduction to setting up your guitar

Before you start a set up of an electric Guitar, there are a few checks that you need to do, to see what needs to be done in the set up.
1. You need to make sure that the guitar has strings on so you can see what you need to change on the guitar to make it sound better.
2. You have to check the action of the guitar, look at the high of the strings from the frets and the pick ups.
3. Look at the bridge and the saddles to see what high they are set at.
4. Have a play of the guitar and see what you don’t like about the way it plays. If you are setting up your own guitar it has to be set up how you want it. Once you have looked at the four above checks, you can start to set your guitar up to play how you want it to play.
Hopefully the next 5 Steps will help you to get the sound and feel you want out of your guitar.

Step 1 The Strings

Most people tend not to think about the strings, but you will find that the strings you use and the way you put them on the guitar is imprtant to the final sonud and feel of the guitar.
The first thing you have to do is to take off the old strings and find a set of strings you enjoy playing. There best way to put new strings on is as so, if you thread the string through the bridge and place it in the nut, then measure about two machine heads worth of string away from the machine head you want to place the string on to and bend it at a 90 degree angle. Tighten the machine head while pressing the string down onto the headstock, you should get about three rap rounds for the bottom E string and will gradually get more the thinner the string gets. Get off any excess string, this stops the excess string hitting the strings and affecting the sound, doing this will also give your string a professional and pleasing look. You now have to tune the guitar up so you can see what needs to be done on the rest of the guitar.

Step 2 The Truss Rod

There are a few different types of truss rod you may come across.

1. The Fender type
As you tighten the truss rod the neck will bend and give you a smaller action, and you slacken the truss rod your neck will loosen, giving you a bigger action.

2. The Cheap aluminium type
This is just a cheap version of the fender type cased in a rectangle metal case, not as good and tends not to work as well

3. The Gibson type
Instead of bending the wood like the Fender type, the Gibson type of truss rod squeezes the wood making it bend in or out.

4. The Ibanez type
This works in the same way as the Gibson, it is just made in a different way. It is two rods welded at one end and the end of one end is welded to a collar, which is screwed on to the bottom rod.

How to adjust the Truss rod

It is fairly simple to adjust your truss rod. You will have to make sure that your new strings are in tune and you will have to work out if you need to tighten or slacken you truss rod. If the gap between you strings and frets is too big you will have to tighten you truss rod (turn it clockwise) if your strings rattle or touch your frets then you will have to slacken your truss rod (turn it anti-clockwise). This will take a few tries and you will have to keep checking if your strings are still in tune.
Adjusting the truss rod will help you to get a good action and string height, but it’s not just the truss rod, it’s also the bridge that effects the action.

Step 3 The Bridge (trem)

There are also a few different types of Bridge (trem) you will come across. The three main types are,

1. The Gibson type is the easiest of the three to use as it is just a curved piece of metal with the saddles on it, which can only be adjusted up and down by two screws, one on each side.

2. The Fender type is a bit more complicated to use. It is like the Gibson as it can only be moved up and down by adjusting two screws, one on each side, but the saddles are individual and can be moved one at a time to get a better sound and for easier tuning.

3. The Floyd rose type is different to both the other types as it is not attached to the body, it rests on two grooved screws,

These screws help to make the bridge move up and down. A Floyd rose can be adjusted like the fender, the saddles are individual. Floyd roses also have find tuning which help for a better sound, and closer tuning.

How to adjust the Bridge

The bridge and the truss rod are a partnership, if you adjust one you will have to adjust the other, this may take some time, but it will be worth it if you want a good sound. You will first have to remove the strings and take the bridge off the body. When it is removed give the bridge and body a good clean this will help your bridge work better and easier. Now add a small bit of wax to the screws and bridge to lubricate it a little, again this will help the bridge work better. Now place the bridge back on the body, re-string and re-tune. Check the action again. The next thing to do is to adjust your bridge. If your strings rattle on your frets the action is too low, the best way to this is to raise each saddle till the rattling stops then set them to a good height for you. If your bridge is too high from your frets, you will have to adjust the saddles again. The best way to do this is to lower your individual saddles till your strings rattle on the frets and raise it till they stop. Check the tuning and then check the action again, you may have to do this a few times to before you get a good sound and action. But trust me when you have found the right height you will be able to hear and feel the difference.

Step 4 Intonation

To get you guitar to sound good all over the fret board, you will have to make sure that the intonation is good. The way to check and do this takes time, but is well worth it. You start off by making sure that all the others adjustments are 100 percent perfect, your bridge and truss rod are set so your action is good, and that the guitar is in tune. If everything is good then you can start. You have to tune the 12th fret harmonic and 12th fret to the same note as the string. For example the E strings 12th fret and 12th fret harmonic has to be tuned to the open E string, and so on. If the note is too flat you will have to move that strings saddle back, and if it’s to sharp you have to move it forward, you can move the saddles by tightening or loosening the screw, thumb reel or Allan key at the back of the bridge. Once again you will have to adjust, check and tune a few time before you get it right. But again it’s worth it for a good all round sound.

Step 5 The Pick-ups

The most common types of pick-ups
All pick-ups can move up and down, but not all of them can move in more ways.

1. Gibson type these pick ups are sloped as the neck and head stock slope backwards,

2. Humbucker type some have two screws but some have three or four, this allows you to slope the pick up in a Gibson fashion.

3. Fender type can slope diagonally as well as up and down, most only have two screws but telecasts pick-ups have three.

How to adjust the pick-ups

When you come to adjusting your pick-ups, it’s up to you, the way you play and the sound you want. You don’t want the pick-ups too far away from the strings or you won’t get any sound, but you don’t want them too close or your strings will touch and rattle. All you have to do is play around with the adjuster screws till you get a sound that is good for you. For the best sound, all the strings have to be the same distance from the pick-ups. It also depends on the action you have just set your guitar at.

9 months ago our bassist left for Dubai to work in a hotel. The band felt like it had lost an arm or leg…. it was tough finding a replacement for Mark since there was probably no one in Bacolod who could play his stuff the way he plays it. And it seemed no one could.

October 2006. We we’re fortunate enough to find a monster of a bassist in Jong Quinal, who filled in and blew our brains out. He’s young at 19, and he plays slap bass just as fast as Richard could blast beat…. thats around 230 bpm in triplets. He can also hold good groove and do overhand tappings and stuff… he simply just kicks ass.

Yesterday June 3, 2007…….. Mark flew in from Dubai, for some God-knows reason his contract got terminated and he was sent home.

Bwahahaha WTF?!

So that makes our band a “double bass” band LOL we have yet to decide what to do with the new lineup shuffle.

The band can’t wait to go intro rehearsal and do a revamp of all our stuff. We’ve got a month or so left before we walk into the studio and record all our songs.

Now that we’re complete again, we’re rarin to fuck brains and get back to assaulting eardrums soon!

I think its worth posting

I was invited to play bass guitar for the girl-fronted band Kill Sophia to play a beach gig in Soleo Beach resort….. about an hour and half drive away from Bacolod down south.

La Salle’s Annual Summer Splash. All students are required to attend….. so there were at least a few thousand students hittin the beach.

So i was looking forward to going bwahahahahaha for the obvious reason that I was single and was on the hunt anyway.

Well the Kill Sophia thing didn’t push through at the last minute because Panoot had Hepa A (harharhar) so she couldnt make it to the gig and sing but I was nonetheless picked up to play for a project band and we played Head Automatica covers for the heck of it.

Obviously I’m fishing for chords cause I keep forgetting how Graduation goes.

Who cares. We all got drunk anyway.

After the Soleo Gig, Albert, Erwin, Errol, Orven and me crammed into Erwin’s Pickup together with Marian (Orven’s girlfriend) and her friends Jackie and Karen.

Mission: To get drunk and party somewhere. We were so not going home yet.

So we packed our coolers with alcohol, pooled cash for gas and we decided to drive all the way up to Buenos Aires (a really really long drive up the mountain) from Soleo beach so we could pitch a tent there.

Unfortunately, two hours later the Buenos Aires management wouldn’t allow us to pitch a tent. They wanted us to rent a cottage for at least Php 1,200

So we drove again down the mountain all the way back to the city to Pavilion near the port area…. then to Errol’s house then finally after being on the road for X number of hours we all crashed into…. Jackie’s house in Eroreco.

Finally.

So as to keep the camping and the outing spirit alive, we pitched a tent in the garden area and pretended to be somewhere else.

Etc etc etc, we all had fun, bonded a bit, got drunk, lumbernecked and slept at around 5am.

My entire week was spent being drunk almost every single night so I’ll only post the highlights.

Part 1: 012 Closing Gig

I left Bacolod City at around lunch time of April 28 lugging along with me my Les Paul, and my compact digital effects.

I was looking forward to this gig all week, and had been like rehearsing like shit over and over again in my head the songs I was to play with my old band Pillbox (rap metal stuff), and as session to Shudifu to play…. emo songs!

Well anyway everything went well, we practiced during soundcheck and everything went fine that night. Place was packed with hundreds of people and it overflowed waay out into the streets.

Ok so I dated my ex for that night. Bad idea?

We agreed to date that night cause we felt… appropriate? We met for the first time in this bar 6 years ago, and had hung out here ever since… so we felt it was a for old time’s sake to date each other and have fun on the last and final night of 012 bar.

2am we parted ways (I didn’t want to bring her home myself, i just got her a ride home and made sure she got home in one piece) and I joined my friends and got even more drunk and I slept at Val’s house where we spent the entire next day watching DVD’s.

Nothing beats closing a bar with a bang.

Took the 4pm boat trip back to Bacolod city and was puking along the way.

Part 2. Miggy’s Little Birthday Party

Still hungover and all I met Richard and Miggy for a quick band meeting before going home and we ended up having beers.

Tons of beers.

The three of us drank more than a case of Red Horse.

I forgot how I got home that night. I totally lost memory.

I woke up the next day with the worst headache I ever had in years.

Part 3: The Youth Battle of the Bands in Iloilo City May 2

I was asked to judge a band contest (again) in Iloilo City. This was sponsored by Chiz Escudero.

Prizes we’re 10k, 5k, and 2.5k

I was like, OMFG wish I could have joined with my band.

Anyway….. our bassists band joined, backed up by Miggy and Richard.

First place went to JunJun’s Battery Charger who played really tight Kapatid covers, 2nd place went to errr….. Big Express BUT they won not because my bandmates were in that band, but because they played better than most of the contestants (they played a really tight set of cheese and greyhoundz covers, if you closed your eyes you’d thought you were hearing an actual live performance), plus they started the moshpit which for me was a major plus.

3rd came of course are my good friends Drive Letter, who play the most kick-ass originals this side of the universe.

As expected all three winners went to Stage 2 and partied the night away along Iloilo River.

3 bands with a combined cash of Php 20,000.00, and they happened to be one big barkada.
Thats enough money to get dozens of people drunk for a week.

You do the math what happened to us until 7am.

I was too drunk to even take a single picture.

Many people would have commited suicide 2 minutes into this modified version of Super Mario Bros.

It’s 2 years since I nuked my Xanga blog (that happened to contain more than 400 entries) and Holy Week seems to have made a profound impact on me I wanted to start writing again.

This is a good start.

Finally I could put myself back on the right track.

I just needed a place to pour all my thoughts and rants anyway.

I have a LOT to discuss and talk about.
